The total dose emitted by a nebulizer, MDI, or Spacer does not, by itself, provide a meaningful approximation of how much medication will be deposited in the patients lungs. Other factors such as particle size, geometric standard deviation, plume geometry, and spray pattern can have very significant effects. Therefore, it is often necessary to combine these variables in a manner that can approximate what amount of medication is actually deposited in the lungs. Piper Medical has experience using a large number of different techniques, the most common of which is to determine the amount of medication present in the delivered aerosol that has a particle size between 0.5 and 5 microns. This is the technique that the FDA uses almost exclusively.
Piper Medical's laboratory is set up to determine respirable dose, regardless of the technique used, for all types of aerosol products. In addition, we can handle any variations or special considerations that you may require for your project.
Piper Medical's decades of experience in the field of aerosol testing, along with our state of the art aerosol lab, make us uniquely capable of providing your every aerosol testing need. If aerosol testing is part of a strategy for obtaining FDA approval for your aerosol product, Piper Medical's extensive expereience with the FDA will make your job easy.
